Qun Gua (a.k.a Kua, Kwa) (裙褂) is a magnificent combination of traditional wedding culture, art and aesthetic. Origins of the Qun Gua could be traced back to the Qing Dynasty, when the custom was first practiced in Guangdong and later popularised in other parts of the empire.

THE HISTORY

Qun Gua is a symbolic wedding costumes in Chinese wedding heritage. Though this traditional Qun Gua travels a history of more than three hundred (300) years; most of the aesthetic and philosophy of this costumes are still preserve till today. The garb is divided into two (2) portions - the top (Gua) and the skirt (Qun). The process steps from design up till actual completion of a set of Qun Gua carries significant and auspicious blessing to the wedding couple. Using traditional gold embroidery technique; the Qun Gua is embroidered with propitious motifs that represent blessings to the newly wed. 

THE GOLD EMBROIDERY

Gold embroidery (釘金繡) is the most regal and luxurious of embroidery techniques applies on Qun Gua. It could takes up to twelve (12) months to complete one. The whole process requires investment of time and effort in making the embroidery a lifelike piece of artwork. This artistic work has even been listed as one of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in China.

 

In recent years; with decreasing master of succession, there is an increasing market demand on made-to-measure/order (custom-made) gold embroidery Qun Gua as a family heirloom from generation to generation.
